From November 29th to 30th, 2025, the “3rd Forum on Scientific Development of Underground Space,” jointly organized by the Underground Space Professional Committee of the Chinese Society for Urban Studies and the Tianjin Rail Transit Association, was successfully held in Tianjin. Themed “Resilience as the Foundation, Digital Intelligence as the Driver,” the forum brought together over 200 experts, scholars, and industry representatives from the field of underground space. Experts presented a series of high-level academic reports, integrating cutting-edge theoretical research with extensive practical experience around the forum’s theme. To deepen exchanges, the Professional Committee will systematically compile and release the forum reports in phases.
This issue first highlights the report by Professor Zhang Dingli, Executive Deputy Director of the Professional Committee and President of the Beijing Jiaotong University Sichuan-Tibet Railway Research Institute, titled “Tunnel Stiffness Design Theory and Integrated Safety Synergistic Control Methods.”
Expert Introduction

Zhang Dingli is a professor and doctoral supervisor at Beijing Jiaotong University, Director of the Sichuan-Tibet Railway Research Institute, and the academic leader of the national key discipline “Bridge and Tunnel Engineering.” He serves as the Director of the Tunnel and Underground Engineering Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Education, the Director of the Key Laboratory of Urban Underground Engineering of the Ministry of Education, and the project leader of the National Key Research and Development Program “Key Technologies for Construction Safety Assurance in Subway and Underground Utility Tunnel Projects.” He is also the chief scientist of the National “973 Program” project “Fundamental Theoretical Research on the Safety of Urban Underground Engineering” and the head of the National “863 Program” project “Core Technology Research for Drill-and-Blast Construction of Large Cross-Sea Tunnels.” He has led three key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Additionally, he holds several prominent positions, including member of the Expert Committee of the China Highway and Transportation Society, Vice Chairman of the Tunnel Engineering Branch, Leader of the Engineering Construction Group of the Expert and Academic Committee of the China Association of Metros, Executive Director of the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering, Vice Chairman of the Engineering Risk and Insurance Research Branch of the China Civil Engineering Society, Executive Director of the Railway Branch of the China Engineering Construction Standardization Association, and member of the Bridge and Tunnel Committee of the China Railway Society. He also serves as an editorial board member for journals such as the *Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering*, *Journal of Rock Mechanics and Engineering*, *China Civil Engineering Journal*, and *Coal*.
He has published over 300 SCI and EI-indexed papers, authored nine monographs including *Safety Risks and Control in Urban Underground Engineering Construction*, completed more than 30 major national and provincial-level projects, obtained 41 national invention patents, and received two special prizes, nine first prizes, and three second prizes at the provincial and ministerial levels.
His research primarily focuses on tunnel and underground engineering, and he has been extensively involved in the construction of major national projects such as railway tunnels, highway tunnels, and subway tunnels. He has made innovative achievements in areas including the theory of stability control and stiffness design methods for complex tunnel surrounding rock, core technologies for drill-and-blast construction of undersea tunnels, theories and technologies for safety risk control in urban underground engineering, and mechanisms of operational tunnel defects and collaborative repair technologies. His work has contributed to the development of systematic theoretical insights and core technical frameworks.
