The “Science and Innovation China” survey on intelligent manufacturing and new material industries in underground spaces (Beijing and Xiong’an stations) has been successfully completed

To promote the development of intelligent manufacturing in underground spaces and the new material industry, and to better serve key enterprises in technological innovation, from June 10 to 12, 2025, the Underground Space Special Committee of the China Society for Urban Studies organized experts to conduct a survey on the “Science and Technology Innovation China” project related to intelligent manufacturing in underground spaces and the new material industry. The survey visited the Beijing Urban Construction Design Technology Industrial Park, the National Engineering Research Center for Green and Safe Construction Technology of Urban Rail Transit, and the underground spaces in the Xiong’an New Area. Professor Zhang Dingli, Executive Vice Chairman of the Special Committee, Master Yang Xiuren, Vice Chairman of the Special Committee, Huang Jun, Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the Special Committee, and Professor Zhang Junyi from Beijing Jiaotong University, among other experts, participated in the survey.

The experts from the service group conducted research at the Beijing Urban Construction Design Technology Industrial Park and the National Engineering Research Center for Green and Safe Construction Technology of Urban Rail Transit. The Beijing Urban Construction Design Technology Industrial Park, which was completed and successfully opened in October 2023, is a modern, high-quality enterprise park integrating scientific research, production, and office facilities. It is equipped with multiple world-first and internationally leading scientific research platforms and supporting facilities, capable of undertaking nearly 300 scientific research and testing needs related to underground structures, track structures, mechanics and fatigue tests, as well as various infrastructure, building engineering inspections, environmental protection inspections, etc., both internally and externally.

The park has hosted over 30 laboratories, among which the National Engineering Research Center for Green and Safe Construction Technology in Urban Rail Transit stands as the sole national-level engineering research center dedicated to researching green and safe construction technology in the domestic urban rail transit sector. With the goal of implementing the innovation-driven development strategy and promoting breakthroughs in key core technologies, the center undertakes innovative research and engineering application work in the field of green and safe construction technology for urban rail transit, focusing on developing three major innovation platforms: “Green Construction Engineering Technology and Equipment,” “New Track Structure Technology,” and “Construction and Operation Safety Technology,” as well as a supporting platform for “Research and Engineering Digital Technology.” It comprises seven R&D centers and 1+N research and demonstration application bases. The center has become a significant strategic scientific and technological force in the country, supporting major national strategic tasks, promoting green and sustainable development in urban rail transit engineering construction, serving major technological research and development, and key project implementation in urban rail transit, driving industrial development, and deepening integration within the industrial chain.

During the research period, the experts from the service team gained a deep understanding of the experimental equipment, scientific research achievements, and practical cases of the park and center in the fields of green construction and safety technology research and development for rail transit. They also engaged in discussions on the integrated application of intelligent construction technology and green and low-carbon concepts in the field of rail transit.

Experts from the service team also conducted research on the underground space in the Xiong’an New Area, understanding the current status of construction and utilization of various types of underground spaces, diagnosing potential issues during the operational phase, and providing new ideas for the further high-quality operational use of the underground space in the Xiong’an New Area and the development of the underground space industry.
