The Underground Space Professional Committee of the China Urban Science Research Society is a direct subsidiary branch of the Society. It was initiated and established in Beijing in 2023 by JSTI Group and Beijing Jiaotong University, with Chinese Academy of Engineering academician Liang Wenhao serving as the Chairman. The Committee brings together renowned experts, scholars, and leading enterprises in the field of underground space from both China and abroad. It advocates for the important role of underground space in urban science, encourages interdisciplinary integration, and promotes exchanges, cooperation, scientific research progress, and technological innovation in the field of underground space in China and internationally.

The Committee currently has nearly 30 member units from across China and approximately 200 top national expert members. It has established six working groups: the Education and Science Popularization Working Group, the Green Underground Space and Equipment Working Group, the Planning and Policy Research Working Group, the Safety and Disaster Prevention Working Group, the Station-City Integration and TOD Working Group, and the Youth Working Group, leading the development of the underground space industry. Annually, the Committee organizes nationwide academic conferences such as the National Forum on Underground Space Science Development and the Forum on Green Innovation Development of Underground Space. It also conducts national-level events including science popularization creative competitions, science education and research activities, and vocational skills competitions. Additionally, it is building a national network of underground space science popularization venues following a “1 main venue + N specialized branch venues” model. The Committee provides social services such as research projects, development and release of group standards, and evaluation of scientific and technological achievements for government bodies and industrial chain enterprises. Serving as a bridge between Chinese and international underground space industry organizations, it hosts or co-hosts international annual conferences for organizations like the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) and the Associated Research Centers for the Urban Underground Space (ACUUS). It also jointly initiates the establishment of international awards and collaborates with the ISO International Organization for Standardization to initiate and establish standard working groups related to underground space led by China.
